Brian W asked:
Hi, I was wanting to start selling my home grown tomatoes. Anyone have ideas for maketing, signs, delivery sevice, ect. And more important, do i have to have some permit or do taxes or somthing? I have an extra lot next to my home. Planning on gardening there and selling them there. THANK YOU!

The Tomato Shop
If you make money selling your tomatoes, you need to pay taxes. You can start small (I assume you’re not talking growing tons of tomatoes per year) by setting up a stand at the end of your driveway, or getting a booth at various farmers markets. Once you look at expanding into volume selling to supermarkets or grocery stores and such, you may be subject to FDA regulations and other health inspections, especially with the increase in scrutiny due to e. coli contaminations.
One area of rapid growth is in organic foods. This means no artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Of course, to be labeled organic means meeting certification by the FDA (and I believe the application itself is something like 130 pages long). You can use the “natural” moniker, which means that your buyers are going on faith that you are following “natural” or organic growing methods, but does not require the organic certification.
